Pay Close Attention to Reactions
Ask questions, probe deeply, and keep great notes about your process.
FailâYes, Fail
Part of the prototyping process is learning from the failed parts. Your job as a prototyper is both to expect failure and to make sure that others in the organization understand that failure is an integral part of the process. In fact, thatâs where real learning emerges. Make sure you find time to debrief about whatâs been learned.
Try Again
Sometimes a prototype works terrifically the first time. But more often than not, you learn that some parts work and some donât. Take that knowledge, make changes, and go back out to your audience (internal or external) with a new, improved version so you can learn more, verify your hunches from the first round, and arrive at the best product possible. Trying again rapidly has substantial benefits. Linda has developed a great many exhibition prototypes and has learned that a speedy process of iterationâwhere you make a series of changes to the prototype along the way, refining it based on what you learnâoften produces the best results. If you think in terms of evaluation, this is definitely qualitative not quantitative. You can see how visitors react to label copy, how they understand (or fail to comprehend) instructions for interactives, and even how visitors can take you further in an idea than you ever intended. It helps to keep a kit of supplies to make it easy to dive in and revise: odd bits of foam core, mat board or cardboard, a roll of newsprint, markers and colored pencils, clipboards, magnets and magnet boards, Post-it notes, Ethafoam, and fabric.
